I have received your letter of August 24th last, by which you announce that the Junta over which you preside, has assumed the Executive Power of Nicaragua.
Reciprocating the sentiments of friendship for the United States expressed in your communication, and apprising you of the constant desire of this Government for the true prosperity of Nicaragua, as well as of my personal good wishes.
Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) was a lawyer who spent most of his career in politics. He served as Sheriff of Erie Co., NY, Mayor of Buffalo, Governor of New York, before running for President of the United States. Cleveland won the popular vote in three elections, 1884, 1888, and 1892, but only won the first and third electoral college votes. He remains the only President to have served two non-consecutive terms.
