- Lot Description
.53 oval bore, 36" barrel, retained by three barrel bands. Brown finish, walnut stock. Breechloading, bolt action, under hammer percussion rifle. Weak Green patent markings are present tang behind action. Long-range rear sight, sling swivels, iron cleaning rod. Includes correct J.D.G. marked socket bayonet. Only about 4500 of these scarce rifles were produced, utilizing Charles Lancaster's oval bore patent. About 1500 were sold in the United States with 900 going to the US military. The other 3000 rifles were sold on a Russian contract. The apparently "smooth bore" utilized slightly different minor and major axis measurements, and the entire barrel was twisted along its length resulting in a form of mechanical rifling similar in concept to that utilized by Sir Joseph Whitworth. While the British found the Lancaster system shot very accurately, it was also found to foul horribly. Today, these bolt action, percussion oval-bore rifles are quite scarce.
Good. Retains some brown finish mixed with oxidized patina. Lock needs mechanical attention, bolt system functions correctly, but bolt release button is replaced and the bolt cannot be removed from the receiver. Bore is very good. Stock with repaired cracks around wrist and tang, numerous bumps and ding or sleeps, and some added finish.Condition
