Greek, first quarter 20th century. Oil on canvas, laid on cardboard, unframed. A view of Eastern Orthodox monasteries atop the Meteora rock towers in Central Greece, inscribed Cety of Kayafa - Azia - Turghe in a vignette located l.r., unsigned; 26.5 x 35 in. (canvas size).
For centuries, Meteora was populated by ascetic monks, who originally settled in caves inside the steep rock formations. At the end of the 14th century, the area became coveted by the Turks. In order to evade the Turkish occupation, the monks established their monasteries at the top of the pillars, with limited access made possible by precarious ladders and nets hauled up from the top. It is not until the early 20th century that steps were carved into the rock to facilitate access to the monasteries perched on the pinnacles. Of the many housing structures added during the 14th and subsequent centuries, only six remain today.
Scratches and dents to surface resulting in paint losses. The canvas was trimmed and laid down on cardboard. Wear to all edges. There is one small loss in the lower right corner. The piece was taken out of the frame to avoid damage, but the frame (shows wear such scratches and losses) is available if requested.
