CDV of George Armstrong Custer taken in May 1865 by John Goldin & Co., Washington, DC. Illustrated in Katz' Custer in Photographs [K-70]. Housed in oval brass frame with black velveteen edge (mourning?), with loop at top for hanging.
Included with the lot is research information from Paula Fleming (Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History) regarding Goldin's history in Washington. In 1858 Goldin was at 356 PA Ave. (Plumbe's old studio), but it is not clear whether he is working for someone else or has his own studio or has a partner (Samuel Mills is also listed at this address). From 1860 - 1863 he is listed as a photographer, but with no address. A later ad (1865) states "recently of Brady's Gallery," so he may have been working for Brady during this time, or maybe still at 356 PA Ave. From 1864 - 1869 John Goldin & Co. occupied the 4 Market Space address listed on the back of this CDV. The next 13 years are listed at 819 Market Space, but it is thought this was a function of some re-numbering of streets, not a move of the studio. In 1884 he seems to have moved to 1016 Mass Ave, NW. It is unknown how long the studio was in business there, as this was near the cut-off date for Fleming's research.
