Lot Description

Fouque, F. and Levy, A. Michel. MINERALOGIE MICROGRAPHIQUES ROCHES ERUPTIVES FRANCAISES. Paris: Quantin, 1879. 2 Volumes, Text and Atlas of 55 Chromolithograph Plates with printed tissue-overlays. Text volume is 12 by 9 1/4 inches; Atlas is 14 by 11 1/4 inches. DSB vol.5 p.88: "Fouqué made three important contributions to science. First he added significantly to the knowledge of volcanic phenomena. Secondly, in collaboration with Auguste-Michel Lévy he introduced into France the study of rocks by microscopical petrography. (Thirdly,) the two-volume work Minéralogie micrographique laid the foundation of modern petrography by introducing a classificatory system based on the mineralogical composition, the structure and the chemical composition of volcanic rocks." Condition

Binding edges are worn and rubbed; contents are sound, solid, clean and Very Good. The 55 chromolithograph plates are fresh and vibrant.
