Lot of 2. Kearny, Phillip (1815-1862). Union Major General. ALS, 1p, "Head-Quarters, New Jersey Brigade." Camp Seminary(?), March 24, 1862. Addressed to Colonel O.T. Halsted Jr. Kearny thanks him for helping him on a visit with Jersey Regiments. Written five months before his untimely death at the Battle of Chantilly.
Accompanied by CDV of Private Halsted, the recipient of Kearny's letter, credited twice to Mathew Brady.
General Kearny was a millionaire, amputee, and noted US officer who served bravely in the Mexican and Civil Wars. He studied at the French Cavalry school and used that knowledge on the battlefield. While in command of the corps, he was credited with developing the concept of corps badges, which would go on to be adopted by the entire army. During the Civil War, he fought at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, and throughout the Peninsula Campaign until dying on September 1, 1862, at the Battle of Chantilly.
Toning of the paper and CDV. Some clipped corners of the CDV and light foxing. Typical folds of the letter.
This piece is assembled with a ca 1800 dial, a newer case, and a French movement. Winding arbors are incorrect length for the dial, and pendulum appears to be French.
