- Lot Description
American, late 19th century. A sterling silver match safe, one side engraved Nelson H. Davis / Worcester / Mass, the other side engraved with a leaping fish inlaid with gold, marked on interior rim with unknown maker's mark; ht. 2 .75, wd. 1.5 in.
General Nelson Henry Davis (1821-1890) was a long-serving military officer who began his career in the Mexican War, served in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War, and the Indian Wars in New Mexico. He was named inspector-general both in the division of the Atlantic and of the Missouri, and retired as a brigadier general in 1885.
