.44 caliber, 41" octagonal barrel. Top of barrel marked J. FORDNEY / LANCASTER, PA. Front action flintlock with rounded, bridled iron pan and flat swan-necked cock. Double set triggers. Engraved four-piece brass patchbox, two-piece brass buttplate, brass triggerguard, sidle plate and forend cap. Two faceted brass thimbles and a faceted entry pipe. Forend restored from the entry pipe forward.
Seller's lists two Jacob Fordney's working in Lancaster, one during the last part of the 18th century to approximately 1819, and the second working ca 1838-1878. This rifle was likely produced by the latter, although it could be the work of John Fordney of Lancaster, working during approximately the same period. Like most classic full-stock Pennsylvania rifles, this one has undergone substantial repair and restoration, including the replaced forend, numerous wood repairs around the lock and wrist, and likely a re-conversion from percussion to flint with a replacement lock. The rifle, however, retains a lovely form with a fantastic patchbox and is worthy of a quality restoration by a true craftsman.
