- Lot Description
French, early 19th century. Oil on canvas, framed. A portrait of Caroline Bonaparte and her son Prince Achille Murat. Signed Quevanne and dated An 1805 l.r.; 30.5 x 24.25 in. (sight), 35.5 x 29.5 in. (frame).
Caroline Bonaparte (1782-1839), married to Joachim Murat, became Queen consort of Naples in 1808 when her husband was appointed King of Naples by her brother Napoleon. After the execution of Joachim in October 1815, Caroline and her children went into exile in Austria. Achille (1801-1847), Joachim and Caroline's eldest son, portrayed here, emigrated to the United States in 1821, eventually settling in Florida (first Saint Augustine, then Tallahassee), after renouncing his European titles and citizenship. During the Seminole Wars, Achille was a Lieutenant Colonel of Florida's militia.
