The bell was found in a barn on Darby Dan Farm, Galloway, Ohio. Originally owned by Jean Bernadotte and his partners, the bell successively became the property of two other French entrepreneurs: Maurice Schwob, who purchased the company in Suresnes at the end of the 1890s, and Marcel Boussac, who probably acquired it during the 1920s. In addition to being a highly successful businessman in the textile industry, Boussac was also an avid race horse breeder, and in 1931, he sent one of his most acclaimed Thoroughbred broodmares, La Troienne, to Idle Hour Stock Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Idle Hour Stock Farm was purchased in 1949 by John W. Galbreath, the founder and owner of Darby Dan Farm. Most likely, the bell was sent to Kentucky as a gift along with La Troienne, before Galbreath eventually brought it to Galloway, where it was discovered.
