Jefferys, Thomas. North America From the French of Mr D'Anville Improved with the Back Settlements of Virginia and Course of Ohio Illustrated with Geographical and Historical Remarks. London: 1755. Copperplate engraving with color outlines. 18.5 x 21 in.
An important map used as propaganda to justify British claims in North America at the outset the French and Indian War.
Published in 1755, just after a French and Indian force defeated the British forces near Fort Duquesne, Jefferys' map attempted to legitimize the British claims during the fight with the French and Indian forces and on the eve of the larger Seven Years War. There is a detailed list at lower right titled "English Title to their Settlements on the Continent" defining their claims with date of settlement, boundaries, and treaty citations. At upper left is a detailed description of "French Incroachments" listing their perception of French intrusions into their claims. Prominent Indian nations from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico are also shown.
A 3 in. tear to the southeast of Newfoundland has been reinforced with tape on verso. Otherwise excellent, with only the typical folds.
