American (Connecticut), ca 1880s. A pair of pastels on paper of a cat and a dog, likely copied from period prints. Housed in black painted frames; dog 13.75 x 17.5 in. (sight), 18 x 21.75 in. (frame), cat 14 x 17.75 in. (sight), 18 x 21.75 in. (frame).
Handwritten notes on the back of each painting attribute them to an Agnes A. Hunt (Smith) of Connecticut. They were then passed to Charles Hunt Lucas of Falls Village, Litchfield ounty, CT. The pastels were purchased at the Mud City Flea Market near Smuggler's Notch, Vermont by the previous owners. Lot includes correspondence between them and multiple institutions attempting to identify the artist.
