- Lot Description
American, ca 1830s. Oil on canvas, by tradition, a bird's eye view of Ironton, Ohio, framed; 21.5 x 29 in. (sight).
Beginning in the 1830s and continuing until the late 19th century, Ironton, the county seat of Lawrence County, Ohio, was the hub of a thriving pig iron manufacturing region that extended across portions of southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.
The scene depicts an early iron works, with careful attention paid to the various components of the manufacturing process including the stock yard of charcoal and iron ore, the charging house, engine room and casting house. In the distance, what is probably a water wheel house is visible on the banks of a large creek.
Exhibition History:
This painting was included in the St. Louis Art Museum's 1977 exhibition Currents of Expansion: Painting in the Midwest, 1820-1940. A label on the verso indicates the painting was on temporary loan to the Huntington Galleries in 1987.
