President's Message. National Journal Extra. Washington: December 2, 1828. Printed broadside, 15 x 21.25 in.
First printing of John Quincy Adams' "State of the Union" speech delivered in Congress one day prior to the Electoral College meeting, which would confirm General Andrew Johnson's victory and the termination of Adams' presidency. Instead of addressing the hotly contested, bitter presidential campaign, Adams used the speech to present a positive view of the nation and his administration's accomplishments.
On relations with American Indians, Adams aspired to "do justice to those unfortunate children of nature" and "secure to the members of our confederation their rights of sovereignty and soil." He also referenced the new academy at West Point, hailing it as "the living armoury of the Nation."
Inked notation on reverse side bleeding through and visible in top left corner of broadside. Some loss in each corner, with loss in lower right corner partially impacting the "s" in "Adams." Some light spotting.
