Harlow, Jean (1911-1937). 1930s "Blonde Bombshell" movie star who died at the young age of 26 while filming Saratoga with Clark Gable. Lot of 7 items collected by Jean Harlow's serious fan Frank Shaffer, the owner & operator of the Virginia Movie Theatre in Harrisonburg, VA. Some of the material is signed, likely in the hand of Harlow's mother, who often "stood-in" for her daughter in her correspondence with fans. The lot includes:
Fantastic full-length "vamping" photograph of Jean Harlow, 8 x 10 in. housed in impressive period frame, signed and inscribed lower right in dark ink: "F. K. Shaffer with every good wish -Jean Harlow"; powerful TLS from Harlow, written just exactly two months before her tragic death, with original stamped envelope embossed "JH - MGM Studios" return address, 7.5 x 10.5 in.; attractive embossed "Christmas Card," approx. 4.5 x 6.5 in., with facsimile signature of Jean Harlow and bowl of flowers on a classical column / podium. With stamped envelope postmarked December 18, 1935; second embossed card with profile of Harlow's face in upper left corner and message "With Every Happiness"; unique real photo postcard of Harlow arm-in-arm with her secretary, signed by both women on front and a message of apology on reverse (likely in the hand of "Mama Jean").
Accompanied by framed photograph, 13 x 16 in., and $1000 check presented to the original owner of this collection, Francis (Frank) K. Shaffer, manager of the Dixie Theatre, Staunton, VA, Warner Bros. National First Prize Winner, "Best Summer Showman, 1951." Refer to http://www.historybroker.com/collection/harlow/harlow.htm for a more detailed description of the lot.
