Carey, George (1851). American inventor. ALS, 2pp, 8 x 10 in., "Office of City Surveyor," Boston, MA. January 2, 1890. The letter has further annotations in pencil that could also be in Carey's hand. Accompanied by 2 cyanotypes, 7.25 x 4.25 in.
George R. Carey was an American inventor and one of the first to propose the telectroscope; a precursor to modern television. Like many inventors, he dabbled in other technologies such as electricity. In a rough draft of a letter to Scientific American, he writes: "I have been studying for a number of years how to generate electricity from solid, liquid, or gasoline fuel, by burning it as zinc is burnt in a voltaic cell'I have constructed two machines for this purpose, one of which burns solid fuel. With this machine I sustained a current of electricity, but the result was not entirely satisfactory." He enclosed cyanotype diagrams along with further information on his work as evidence and asked for his work to be published in case it needed to be patented at a future date for the developing technology. He asked that they not include many details, as he wished "to keep them secret."
Typical folds of the paper, otherwise in excellent condition.
