Gansevoort, Peter (1749-1812). Colonel in the Continental Army, noted for leading the resistance to the Siege of Fort Stanwix in 1777, alongside Benedict Arnold; grandfather of Moby-Dick author Herman Melville. DS as Colonel in the Continental Army, 1p, laid paper, 9.5 x 14 in., Fish Kill (NY). September 26, 1778. Titled "A Return of Clothing Wanting for the 3d New York Regiment," listing articles of clothing and their deficiency in the regiment for the years of 1777-1778, the number received from the State of New York, and the total due for the new year commencing November 21, 1776. Signed "Peter Gansevoort, Colonel." Also signed "J. Mensselaer."
A fantastic chart of Revolutionary War uniform elements.
Items needed include shirts, coats, vests, leather breeches, hose, shoes, hatts [sic] or leather caps; blankets, woollen breeches, linen breeches, frocks, and overalls. Under the command of Colonel Gansevoort, the 3rd New York Regiment took part in the invasion of Canada, the New York Campaign, and defended Fort Stanwix from the British Siege of August 1777. The majority of the regiment remained at Fort Stanwix until November 1778, when it took part in the Sullivan Expedition, so the uniform requests must have been in preparation for that assignment.
Reinforced at center fold.
