- Lot Description
Factory Engraved Marlin 1897 Rifle
.22RF caliber, 24" octagonal barrel with full-length magazine, S/N 194633 . Nickel and gold wash finish, fire blued screws, deluxe checkered pistol-gripped stock with rifle butt, checkered forend. Factory engraved depicting a buck in the central panel on the reverse, surrounded by tight foliate scrolls, and obverse with floral motifs with a geometric boarder. Top of receiver engraved MARLIN SAFETY with boarder lines and simple scrolls. Two-line barrel address reads: The Marlin Firearms Corporation / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. Blued buckhorn rear barrel sight, dovetailed front sight blade with white bead, adjustable folding tang sight. According to the Cody factory records, the rifle was originally shipped from the factory on January 15, 1900. Sometime after the change of the company name to the Marlin Firearms Corporation (ca1922) the rifle was returned to the factory for full nickel plating and gold washed finish. The engraving likely performed at this time as well. Rifle is accompanied by a summary of the consignor's knowledge of the gun's history as well as a copy of the Cody records data search, but not a factory letter.
Provenance: Len Guldman Collection, Denver Co.Very good. Rifle retains much of the applied gold wash finish over nickel plate and retains crisp engraving and clear markings. Mechanically functional, good bore with strong rifling and scattered pitting. Wood with wear, scattered bumps and dings, a few more serious mars on the reverse of the butt and significant smoothing of the checkering on the forend.Condition
