The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure: for January, 1764. Vol. XXXIV, pp 3-55, plus "Prices of Stocks," December 29-January, 1764. 5 x 8 in. Containing an early fold-out engraving, 11.5 x 8 in., entitled "A Perspective View of Pensacola," by John Hinton.
The engraving was issued after a hurricane destroyed the settlement on Santa Rosa Island in 1754, which forced the town to move to the mainland. Following the end of the French & Indian War, Florida was divided between East & West by the British. Although mainly a garrison town at this time, Pensacola was established as West Florida's capital. Pensacola's fort, church, Governor's House, and Commandants House are identified in the engraving, and a number of boats are shown floating in the bay.
Folds in view, slight separation along one fold. Few light spots. Light toning along top margin and right margin. Horizontal tear along left edge that has extended into engraving, just above some of the homes, which has been reinforced on reverse with clear tape. Some soiling, slight damage along top right corner and right edge of magazine.
