Indian Troops Carrying a German Position
wash drawing
signed l.r.
framed, 11.5 x 15.5 in. (sight)
small plaque on frame reads, Presented by the Proprietors of "The Graphic." Informational label on verso gives exhibition information and explains inspiration for the drawing. Drawing depicts Indian troops in bayonet combat with German troops, some casualties at soldiers' feet, and houses in background.
Ernest Prater was a student of Dr. Devonshire's school in London, beginning his career as a publisher's clerk before serving with the 3rd Middlesex Artillery. During the Boer War he served as a correspondent for The Sphere, illustrating battle sites and soldiers for readers back at home. He worked as an illustrator and photographer for multiple other newspapers, magazines, and even books. As a sportsman himself, his specialty was illustrating boys' adventure stories; he therefore worked with authors such as G.A. Henty, R.M. Ballantyne, W.H.G. Kingston, Percy F. Westerman, Frank T. Bullen, Tom Bevan, Herbert Hayens and Bessie Marchant, among others. He is even known to have collaborated with Sidney Paget, the illustrator for the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This particular drawing showcases Prater's affinity for action and his real-life experiences on battlefields in the Boer War.
