Box measures 9.5" x 6.5" x 6.25". Japanned tin with two brass plaques on lid. Top plaque reads "JOEL EDWARDS/& SONS/9 HANOVER ST/LONDON' surrounded by rope with anchor and flag on bottom. Over the plaque is the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom. Lower plaque reads "Lt. COL. CLIFFORD PROBYN/VD.DL.JP." Case is secured by a sliding pin, with folding stands for epaulets and red velvet lining. Epaulets measure 6.75" x 4.75. and are marked with the Star, crown, and anchor of Italy along with the royal monogram of King Victor Emmanuel III (r. July 29, 1900 – May 9, 1946).
Clifford Probyn was born in Monmouthsire in 1842. As an adult he moved to London, forming a partnership as Probyn & Company, a drug and chemist wholesaler, as well as manufacturer of india rubber goods. He obtained a commission in the British Territorial Army as an officer of the 22nd Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps, known as the "Central London Rangers" in 1874. He would eventually rise to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
He was an active political personality and was elected to the London City Council in 1889, 1892, 1895, and 1898. He was elected to the office of Sheriff of London in 1898 and was elected Mayor of the City of Westminster in 1901.
