He was trained at the Royal Foundry in Saxony ca 1840-1844 and Der Stockel lists his working dates starting ca 1844 to his death in 1893. Barella worked in Magdeburg from 1844-1865 and opened his second operation in Berlin in 1860, working there until his death. Barella developed a breech loading paper cartridge conversion for muzzleloading arms ca 1860s and by 1868 had developed the break action system found on this gun, optimized for the self-contained metallic cartridge. In 1871 he was granted the title of "Gun Maker to the Court," a title to which the barrel marking alludes. The firm continued into the early 1930s after his death under the direction of his son. This rifle was likely made during the last two decades of Barella's career, ca 1872-1892. A really lovely late-19th century German stalking rifle from a well respected maker known for quality work.
