Elmer, Ebenezer (1752-1843). New Jersey native who served in the Continental Army, practiced medicine, and represented New Jersey in the US Congress. ALS, "Eben Elmer," 1p, 7 x 9.5 in., Trenton, NJ. June 13, 1783. Elmer, who was a physician in Bridgeton, NJ, at the time, recognizes the military service of an unidentified patriot at the close of the Revolutionary War. He writes, in part:
As I have not had the pleasure of seeing you since our emancipation, suffer me to congratulate you upon your happy return to the tranquil path of domestic life after a severe & long conflict in the dangerous & troublesome duties of a Patriot soldier.
May the prosperous gales of a beneficent providence waft you along the gilded currant of time & conjugal endearment's consummate the felicity of the minutes as they pass.
An exceptional letter from one Revolutionary War veteran to another.
Typical, light folds. Ink has lightened, but is still legible. Few spots. Doctor Elmer in period ink on reverse.
