- Lot Description
Lithographed broadside, 23.5 x 29.5 in. (sight), framed, 28 x 34 in. Facsimile of the Emancipation Proclamation. Chicago, IL: Ed. Mendel, 1863. A vertically formatted issue featuring an engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln at top left.
Using the original manuscript of the Emancipation Proclamation, Edward Mendel lithographed the text, producing several facsimile versions of Lincoln's historic document. Thomas B. Bryan, president of the Soldier's Home in Chicago, then took possession of the facsimile broadsides, which were sold to raise funds for the US Sanitary Commission.
The manuscript was later destroyed in the Chicago fire of 1871, thus making this a scarce facsimile record of a lost Lincoln manuscript.
Toning to broadside, with four slightly darker vertical tones lines, possibly a result of wooden frame backing. Few scattered stains and slight surface abrasions. Nicks in frame. Not examined outside frame.Condition
