Elnathan Taber Federal Tall Case Clock
American (Roxbury, Massachusetts), ca 1800. A carved and inlaid Federal tall case clock in mahogany, having an arched bonnet topped by three brass ball-and-spike finials, above a glazed door and two reeded, brass, and stop-fluted columns with brass caps, opening to a polychromed and gilt dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, a seconds hand, and a calendar aperture, decorations include fruit and flowers in the corners and a moon phase disc in the arched top with village and nautical scenes, signed Elnathan Taber., on the front, and and J. Minott 91 on the back the waist having a molded tombstone door, flanked by reeded, brass, and stop-fluted quarter columns with brass caps, the whole resting on a molded box base with central paterae inlay and rising on ogee bracket feet; ht. 97.75, wd. 21.5, dp. 10.25 in.
Elnathan Taber (American, active 1790-1854) was an apprentice and good friend of Simon Willard (American, 1753-1848).
Surface wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use. Some small veneer cracks and repairs with a loss near top of arched bonnet door. Loose piece of molding on bottom of waist door. Box base with an age split running horizontally across the center. Probably had a fretwork cornice which is now mostly missing. Dial with some paint crazing and losses.
