American, ca 1891. A sterling silver match safe in the form of a sealed envelope, addressed to Elisha Dyer, Jr. / New York / From H.G. with an enameled stamp, the reverse engraved with armorial including text Droit Et Avant, with gold wash interior marked Sterling / Pat June 21-90; ht. 2 1/8, wd. 1 1/4 in.
Although not marked for Gorham, this match safe shares characteristics with others that were marked for Gorham, and also shares the same patent date as those marked for Gorham. The recipient of the safe was an important figure in Rhode Island history, and Gorham pieces were produced in Rhode Island.
Elisha Dyer, Jr. (1839-1906) most notably served as Governor of Rhode Island (1897-1900) and also served as a Rhode Island state senator, was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, and also served as the Mayor of Providence during his political career. Dyer Jr. was a second-generation governor, his father Elisha Dyer Sr. served as Governor from 1857-1859. Dyer Jr. also served as a sergeant in the Civil War where he was wounded in an accidental explosion. He continued his military service in the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery, and eventually rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Rhode Island Militia.
