A major figure of American Impressionism, Cincinnatian E. H. Potthast is mostly remembered for his colorful beach scenes. As exemplified here, however, he was also part of 1910 trip to the Grand Canyon South Rim funded by the Santa Fe Rairoad, along with Thomas Moran, among others. The trip gave him an opportunity to depict Western landscapes, and the occasion proved so rewarding that Potthast returned multiple times. This scene, humorously referencing the Acropolis in its title, is a lovely example of the inspiration that Potthast found there.
