- Lot Description
American (Virginia), late 18th-early 19th century. An early embroidered textile with wool appliqué depicting a manor house with surrounding land and out buildings, including rows of oak trees and multiple figures engaged in farm activities. In the foreground is a shepherd seated underneath a tree, a woman leading several cows, an African American man with horses, and a woman feeding chickens outside of a stable. Inside the front gate, is a large yard with a single figure holding a gun. The main house is flanked by two chapels and surrounded by trees, with birds flying overhead; 34 x 46.5 in.
According to family tradition, this textile was made by the daughters of General George Mathews (1739-1812), and depicts his Georgia estate. General Mathews is purported to be the figure at the lower right, shooting a squirrel from a tree. While supposedly depicting a scene in Georgia, the textile is believed to have been made in Virginia by Jane (1771-1844) and Anne (1761-1840) Mathews. Anne was the wife of General Samuel Blackburn (1759-1835) and Jane was the wife of Isaac Telfair. Both families lived in the area of Staunton, VA. The textile came to Clinton County, Ohio with the Telfair family, and descended in that family to the current owner.
