.480 bore diameter, 44" octagonal tapered barrel, smoothbore thicker at breech than the muzzle and with swamped barrel. Notched rear barrel sight small blade front sight. Nice early style lock with flat style hammer slight curl to the top of the hammer. Finial on the frizzen spring with frizzen spring screw coming from inside the lockplate, faceted pan. Rear tang is flared with fleur-de-lis design on the end. Behind the tang there is raised carving and German Silver thumb rest. Early heavy butt 2" wide, with brass mountings, engraved four-piece patchbox. Early style patchbox with unusual bird head-shaped top and wire inlays in the wood near the head with the beak pointing downward. The patchbox door is a very early and scarce domed lid design. Wide brass triggerguard, brass ferrules are wide in style with faceted sides. Raised carving behind the rear ferrule. Brass toe plate with patchbox button. Full-stock curly maple with raised carving on the left side of the butt and around the cheek piece. Carving around the lockplate coming to a tear drop at the front of the plate. The same style of carving on the left side with brass side plate. Moulding around the ramrod channel. Early pig-tail trigger.
Henry Mauger worked in Douglas Township Eastern Burks County, PA. Circa 1770-1777. This is a very early rifle. 7" horn engraved with piewheels and initials JTR.
This rifle is in fine condition with lots of untouched patina. Stock is excellent and the metal with nice untouched dark brown patina. There are three splinters of wood have been replaced along the barrel channel. One on the right side running 11" from the nose cap and about 0.25" wide. On the left side about 4" from the nose cap 1/4" wide to 0.06" wide. Another on the left side 5" long by 0.25" wide in the area of the notched rear barrel sight. These have been expertly done. The rifle is pretty much in the black and untouched and fresh to the market.
