David Boudon (American, Kentucky, active ca 1797-1817). Watercolor and pencil on paper, housed in an eglomisé frame. A profile portrait of a woman, unsigned, with pencil inscription on reverse reading Done By / David Boudon Painter / from Geneva in Switzerland / In Frankfurt Kentucky / 15 February 1817, PLUS a later oval gouache and pencil on textured fibered canvas board copy of the miniature, unsigned, also housed in an eglomisé frame; 3.25 x 2.75 in. (miniature sheet), 5.25 x 4.75 in. (miniature frame), 10 x 8 in. (board), 13.75 x 11.75 in. (frame).
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, David Boudon is known as a miniaturist and watercolor profile portraitist working in Philadelphia at the end of the 18th century and in Ohio (Chillicothe) at the beginning of the 19th century. He likely traveled to Frankfurt from Chillicothe to execute this portrait.
Provenance: Property from the Americana Collection of Dr. Dale and Ann Knight Gutman, Cincinnati, OhioThe later copy is laid on cardboard and appears to have been trimmed. The miniature is oval but the sheet is square and hasn't been trimmed.Condition
