The Boston News-Letter. Boston: Printed by B. Green for John Campbell, March 10-17, 1718. No. 726. Folio sheet printed recto and verso, 8.125 x 12.75 in.
Very early issue of the first successful American Newspaper with news of the surrender of pirates in the Caribbean.
The Boston News-Letter was first printed in 1704, a time when no other city in North America had a regular newspaper. Much of the news came from London and was staunchly loyalist; the British government subsidized the paper and each issue had to be approved by the Royal Governor of Massachusetts.
This issue features news from ships arriving from the Caribbean reporting on the surrender of the pirate Captain Henry Jennings and others to British authorities at Bermuda in order to take advantage of the royal decree, which offered amnesty to pirates who turned themselves in by September 1718.
Also included is the text of a speech by the King delivered to Parliament on November 21, 1717 -- almost four months prior to printing -- regarding the national debt and the duty to spread the Church of England and Protestantism in Europe. The second page includes news from Europe of the persecution of Protestants and two reports regarding the seven-year-old King Louis XV of France. One report from Paris calls the king's health "unsteddy" while a report from England via Maryland states he has died and Philip of Spain has claimed the crown.
Toning, a few scattered spots, small tape remnants to top edge verso. Two small holes along fold lines.
