Gazette of the United States. Philadelphia, PA: John Fenno, December 11, 1790. Vol. II, No. 65. 4pp, 11 x 17.5 in.
Featuring front page printing of the full text of President George Washington's Second State of the Union address to Congress, which occurred in the Senate Chamber in New York on December 8, 1790.
Article II, Section 3, of the United States Constitution requires that the President shall "from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union." With this speech coming approximately one year after his initial address to Congress in January of 1780, Washington established the precedent that the State of the Union would be delivered once annually. Published just three days after Washington's second address, this paper prints the entirety of Washington's speech. "In meeting you again I feel much satisfaction in being able to repeat my congratulations on the favourable prospects which continue to distinguish our public affairs." The remainder of Washington's speech includes references to Kentucky seeking entry as a state into the Union, Indian hostilities on the western frontier, a warning against becoming entangled in European wars, as well as other issues.
First published April 15, 1789, the Gazette of the United States was a bi-weekly publication which leaned in support of George Washington and the emerging Federalist Party. John Fenno, its editor and publisher, became an important figure in the history of early American newspapers, and his Gazette of the United States played an important role in the development of partisan dialogue and politics in the United States.
Toned with some foxing and dampstains not affecting readability of text. Edge lines have minor chipping and tearing. Partially separated along vertical fold. With "Gardiner & Rodman, Rodman & Gardiner" inked vertically on the right side of the front page 3rd column.
