.70 caliber, 42.25" octagonal-to-round barrel secured by three flat, spring retained barrel bands, no S/N. Bright finish, brass lock, iron furniture. Unmarked flat beveled stepped brass lock with integral, faceted unbridled brass pan with fence. Plate measures 5.7" in length, including teat at the rear. Semi-banana-shaped lock plate is 1" wide at widest point with flat beveled swan-neck cock. Lock remains in original flint configuration. Barrel is possibly from an older gun and appears to have originally been fully octagonal, but has been altered to round on the top and left octagon underneath, except for the last three inches which were turned completely round and tapered slightly, with a bayonet lug added under the barrel 1" from the muzzle. The bottom of the barrel shows three filled dovetails where tenons for pins used to be located. The bottom of the breech is marked with a raised MK in a depressed rectangular cartouche, a Venus (female) symbol, and two other raised " M " marks. The barrel probably dates from the very late 17th century or the first quarter of the 18th century and was repurposed during the construction of this musket. The stock was repurposed as well, with pins and pipe mounts removed, and band springs added. Interestingly the recesses in the barrel channel for the barrel pin tenons match the locations on the bottom of this barrel, so prior to the installation of the bands, this barrel and stock were likely pinned together. As the lock fits the stock well, it is possible that the musket was originally in this configuration with a pinned stock and subsequently upgraded. Stock with raised carved moldings around the lock, stock flat and breech plug tang. Length of pull quite short at only 12". Simple iron furniture including a two-screw S-shaped side plate, simple flat iron buttplate and triggerguard with rudimentary finial. Triggerguard secured by a screw through the rear tang and another through the counterpane to engage the trigger plate tenon. Simple flat trigger with reward curl at terminus is also secured by a screw through the counterpane. Sling swivels secured with screws to a lug forward of the triggerguard and the middle barrel band. An interesting upgraded flintlock musket altered from a pinned configuration to a band secured configuration. While the gun shows some general resemblance to the French M1717 or even earlier pattern arms, it does not appear to be of French manufacture, and may be a Low Country or Liege-made musket based upon that basic design that was later upgraded after the French adoption of barrel bands with the 1728 series of arms. The musket is accompanied by an old trumpet head ramrod that is probably a replacement, a French AN IX socket bayonet that fits perfectly and a crude tompion with a lead top, wood body and iron pin that extends at least an 1" below the body of the tompion.
