Early Engraved Philadelphia Powder Horn by Pointed Tree Carver
12" length, smooth spout with an engrailed edge. Engraved with the British coat of arms, City of Philadelphia, a banner being held by an angel, engraved in the banner are the words Ino Pvrviance Anno 1768 [John Purviance, in the year 1768]. Also ships, a man in a carriage, a British fort. Missing the base. Well-executed engraving and very artistic. This was an engraved horn that belonged to a British loyalist and went back to England and was in the family and now has come back to America for sale. Pre-Rev War engraved powder horn the cataloger would attribute to the "Pointed Tree Carver."
This horn has a nice untouched deep amber brown patina. Overall an excellent untouched horn that is missing the original base.Condition
