Printed scorecard, 4.25 x 5.5 in., 4pp, for the April 8, 1888 baseball game between the Sacramento Altas and the Reports, with a woodcut of "The Late M.L. Anderson of the Alta Base Ball Club" on the cover, the scorecard and lineups for both teams on the interior pages, and an advertisement for the Sacramento Subscription News Co. on the back cover.
A rare memorial scorecard for Sacramento's first professional baseball club, unused and in excellent condition, memorializing perhaps the first pro player to die on the field of play.
We could find nearly nothing on M.L Anderson except for a line in The New York Clipper Annual of 1891, an almanac of the year's events in theatre, music, and sport, including "A Complete History of Baseball and Cricket." The "History of Baseball" section includes an entry on "Accidents" and includes the line: "Heart disease, believed to be from over excitement, caused the death of spectators at professional contests three times, and also caused the death of M.L. Anderson of the Haverly Club of San Francisco, while pitching in a game at Oakland, Cal., March 12, 1888." We could find no record of any other professional baseball player to die on the field before that time.
Excellent.
