- Lot Description
Early American Made British Style Light Dragoon Pistol
.57 caliber, 8.9375" round barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, brass furniture, hard wood stock. 5.25" flat, flush-fit flint lock with integral, rounded and fenced, bridled pan. Flat reinforced cock with old, crude repair to neck. Lock appears to be in original flint in all respects. No visible marks on lock internally, with the only external mark being a small raised P in a depressed circle under the pan. Barrel with no visible proofs, pinned barrel was not removed from stock. Flat S-shaped side plate, simple brass triggerguard with our finials. Single brass pipe at entry, iron button head ramrod engraved B16 . While generally resembling a British Land Pattern pistol of the period, the gun is in the opinion of this cataloger an entirely American made copy thereof, with the possible use of an English side plate and a commercial English triggerguard. American made pistols of this period are extremely rare and desirable items.
Good. Metal with a thickly oxidized brown patina with some surface roughness. Mechanically functional, bore evenly oxidized and lightly pitted. Brass with a dark, uncleaned patina. Stock worn with several cracks and some wood loss in the forend, missing a couple of the pins. Additional cracks and loss are present to the rear of the ramrod entry pipe and forward of the triggerguard. A solid and well used example of a likely American-produced pistol ca 1780-1810.Condition
