E. Kahn & Cie Louis XVI-Style Marquetry Commode After a Model by Jean-Henri Riesener
Continental (French), late 19th-early 20th century. A Louis XVI-style, gilt bronze-mounted commode in mixed wood marquetry veneers with oak secondary by E. Kahn & Cie, after the model by Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734-1806), having a shaped, breche violette marble top above a conforming case with three dovetailed frieze drawers, the right and left drawer fronts each fitted with a wreath-form pull stamped KAHN on the back, over two cupboard doors opening to one adjustable shelf, the inlaid central panel depicting a basket overflowing with fruit beside a ewer, a flute, and a vase resting on its side, all flanked by panels of flowerhead trellis continuing onto the sides, the whole above a shaped skirt and rising on ormolu-mounted, scrolled feet, one of which is stamped E. KAHN on verso; ht. 36.5, wd. 66.25, dp. 25 in.
Known for its high quality models of French 18th century furniture, E. Kahn & Cie was a manufacturer and retailer with locations in London, Paris, and New York. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company adeptly reproduced the designs of a number of prominent ébénistes, including Riesener, whose works adorned the palaces of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The commode offered for sale here is based on the original made in 1778 for the cabinet de retraite at the Château de Fontainebleau, later moved to the King's bibliothèque at the Château de Versailles, and currently in the permanent collection of the Château de Fontainebleau.
Surface wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use, including a small repaired chip on front edge of marble top. Some scattered veneer distress and repairs including cracks, separations, and a few small losses. Bronze mounts with some wear/losses to gilding and some areas of tarnishing. Mounted trim with some loose/popping portions. Unable to open center frieze drawer.
