.40 caliber, 33" octagonal-to-round barrel with hook breech. Blued finish, walnut stock. Left angled flat of breech marked A Francotte / A Liege and with Liege proof marks. Unmarked lock retained by a single bolt. Bolster and hammer of Dutch pattern and style. Long range rear sight of Enfield pattern, graduated to 1,200 yards. Bore rifled with four lands and grooves with a fast twist. Sling swivels, Enfield-style ramrod. An interesting Enfield variant based on the P-1856 rifle, but with a much smaller bore and Dutch styling. Possibly a sample or prototype for Dutch military trials. Devlin / 1865 is lightly scratched into the reverse of the buttstock. While nearly 400 soldiers (north & south) with the last name "Devlin" served during the Civil War, it is unlikely that this rifle is in any way related to that conflict.
