Among the four sons of distinguished Virginian, Colonel William H. Terrill (1800-1877) who served in the Civil War -- three for the Confederacy, one for the Union -- only one survived. The son and namesake of this fortunate Dr. George Terrill was born in Roanoke in 1859 and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1883. After returning home to Virginia and practicing medicine for nearly a decade, however, young Terrill set out for adventure, enlisting in the US Army as an Assistant Surgeon and taking part in the Apache Campaign. He served in the Southwest between 1885-1886 then resigned and later settled in San Francisco, becoming a prominent Army Surgeon.
