Silver gelatin printing out paper, 4 x 5.5 in., on thin 5.25 x 8 in. mount with inked inscription: "'Devil Anse' Hatfield/ Father of the 'Hatfield Boys' and One of the famous gang and an interesting figure in the feudal history of West Virginia."
William Anderson Hatfield I (1839-1921), aka "Devil Anse" Hatfield, was chief of the Hatfield Clan during the 40+ year feud with the McCoy family, which involved a series of battles that raged in both West Virginia and Kentucky.
Appears that image was retouched in tree area (behind Hatfield), near his hands and on his shoes. Image has lightened a bit. Some loss to mount corners. Few chips, short creases along perimeter of mount, with few reinforced with tape on verso. Penciled notes on verso.
