Lithograph, finely hand colored, 14.75 x 11.5 in., including margins. Deerfoot, The Seneca Indian Runner, in One of his Celebrated Matches. Unknown publisher, American, ca 1860s.
One of the earliest celebrities in the history of the sport of running, the legendary Lewis "Deerfoot" Bennett (1828-1897) comes to life in this vibrant illustration. The full-blooded Seneca Indian dominated long distance running in the United States and Europe between 1861 and 1863. He garnered the attention of thousands of people throughout his career not only for his world record setting races, but also the persona he created and tactics he used. At almost 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds, Deerfoot typically ran his races barechested, wearing a colorful feather apron around his waist and a band with a single eagle feather around his head. While crossing the finish line, Deerfoot would often yell war whoops. The celebrated Seneca runner certainly distinguished himself from his American and European opponents as well as the fans that flocked to see him as portrayed in this scarce lithograph.
