- Lot Description
The Boston Gazette and Country Journal. Boston, MA: January 5, 1761. 2pp, incomplete, 9 x 14 in.
The front page almost entirely focuses on reports from London regarding the death and funeral services of King George II (1683-1760) who had passed away less than three months earlier on October 25, 1760. Quotes from the sermon delivered by the Dean of Westminster and details of the elaborate funeral ceremony and attendees are included, as well as an illustration of the casket with descriptive caption, stating in part, "The Royal Body, Carried by Twelve Yeomen of the Guard, covered with a large Pall of Purple Velvet and lined with Purple Silk..."
King George II's death opened the throne to young George III (1738-1820), who Bostonians would vilify as a hated tyrant just over a decade later.
Condition
Light folds, with some wear along folds, including few areas of short separation. Some light stains. Some chipping, slight loss along perimeter. Some lightening/fading? to "tte" in "Gazette." Issue incomplete.
Deckled edges and some toning towards edges. Some wear to portfolio. Lithographs are in excellent condition.
