Lot of 2 original pencil sketches, 12 x 8 in., by Daniel Harman, a soldier in the US Colored Troops, depicting Major Horace Bumstead and his tent.
Daniel Harman enlisted in the army at the age of 18 on March 11, 1864. Initially, he enlisted in the short-lived Southard's Independent Company in Pennsylvania, a United States Colored regiment, but it disbanded within 100 days of service. He mustered into a more permanent company, the 43rd USCT, Company A, and reached the rank of corporal by July 1, 1865. He obviously had artistic skill and sketched the tent of his commanding officer, Major Horace Bumstead, as well as the major seated in his tent. Like most black soldiers, Harman's company saw little action but guarded trains from the Wilderness to Petersburg.
Horace Bumstead was Yale educated and commissioned as a major in the USCT in 1864. After the war, he joined the faculty of Atlanta University and taught natural sciences and Latin to some African American students. He assumed the role as President of the University from 1887 until 1907.
Good, some tears at the folds of the paper with archival tape holding it to the mat board.
