- Lot Description
Chinese Young Man
oil on canvassigned l.r.36 x 35 in. (sight)An outstanding early 20th century portrait of a Chinese man, with rank hat and peacock fan, Ashcan style.
A label on verso from the Kansas City Art Institute partially remains, along with hand inscription, having artist's studio address in Chicago, IL. We are surprised to learn that no records of Costa exist, even though he exhibited at the Kansas City show. The painting is of superb quality and perhaps the artist was deceased at a young age.Condition
One small puncture left center, a few flakes of paint revealing primer underneath. Otherwise the painting is in fine condition and was never relined.
