- Lot Description
7.5 in. clip point Bowie blade, 1.1875 in. wide, 3.375 in. long false edge, 12.375 in. in overall length. English made cutlery hilt Bowie, ca 1850s-1860s, marked in three lines at the ricasso; BEST / ENGLISH / CUTLERY. Reverse of blade acid etched with an American Eagle with a bag of money in its beak and floral scrolls. Etching reads in five lines: WE ASK FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT / IS / RIGHT / AND SUBMIT TO NOTHING THAT IS / WRONG and DRAW ME NOT IN HASTE. Accompanied by German silver mounted embossed leather scabbard with gold accents.
Provenance: N. Flayderman and Co., Inc.Knife is in fine overall condition retaining nearly all of the etching on the reverse of the blade and the large majority of the original blade polish. Some tiny spots of light surface oxidation, pinpricking and minor discoloration are scattered over the blade. The cutlery style German silver hilt and cross guard are in fine condition. The leather scabbard is solid, but shows significant flaking and surface finish loss. Embossing remains strong and much of the gold embossing remains in tact. German silver mounts are fine with a dull patina and some minor dings, frog stud is missing from the throat. A really exceptional etched blade patriotic knife from the Antebellum through Civil War period.Condition
