Albumen photograph, 6.5 x 9 in., on 6.75 x 9.75 in. mount with verso credit to Barry, Bismarck and Standing Rock, Dakota Territory. Identified on applied paper label on mount below image, "Curley, General Custer's Scout, and only Survivor of that Horrible Massacre of 1876." Ca 1878.
One of several distinguished portraits of Curley taken by Barry at a single session, almost never seen in this large format.
Curley (ca 1856-1923) was a member of the Crow nation and served as a scout under Custer during one of the most famous battles in the west. Hailed as a hero and cursed as a coward, he is a controversial historic figure whose reputation vacillated during and beyond his lifetime. He is one of the only surviving members of Custer's command at the Battle of Little Big Horn and is buried there.
Toning to image. Some light to moderate soiling along lower right corner, bottom edge and right margin. Corner and edgewear to mount, including some chips, small areas of loss along edges,
