Lot of 13 albumen photographs, most approx. 8 x 5 in., each on 10 x 8 in. mount, many scenes identified in pencil. Photographer unknown. Ca 1880s.
Featuring 5 photographs of Last Stand Hill and the surrounding battleground site where the final moments of the fight between Custer's 7th Cavalry and the Lakota and Cheyenne took place. Two of the photographs show the stone monument engraved with the names of the 7th Cavalry officers and soldiers that died at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Accompanied by the following photographs: Sioux Indian Camp at Crow Agency; Cheyenne Indian Dance; a view of the Yellowstone River; a distant view of what looks to be a family posed in front of a large herd of sheep, with a cowboy on horseback at right overlooking the herd, captioned "Fallen Creek, Mont." (possibly Falls Creek); image of two cowboys near a small log cabin; interior shot of a group of men gathered at S.E. Mills general store; distant view of the small town of Parkman, Wyoming; and a class portrait of students and teachers standing outside the Dayton School in Dayton, Wyoming. Both Parkman and Dayton, Wyoming are about 60 miles south of the Custer Battlefield.
The photographs, which lack any information on the photographer do not appear to have been commercially produced, and may, in fact, all be previously unpublished images by a local amateur photographer.
