Field dispatch, 8 x 4.75 in., dated September 9, 1876, from Adjutant General, Sergeant R. Drum to the commanding officer at Ft. Fetterman. Dispatch was a response from Division Commander, General Phil Sheridan, in Chicago, IL, to a request made by General George Crook, commander of the 5th Cavalry, as it pursued Chief American Horse's Band of Sioux in Big Horn Country and Dakota Territory. Original response from Sheridan was sent via telegraph, then written in pencil and copied in ink.
Pencilled transcript reads:
Chicago Ill/Ft. Fetterman/ Sept 9 - 76/ send word to Captain Furey by scout to bring his train into Ft. Fetterman and that if he does feel strong enough to make the marches by daylight to cease at night. General Crook is of the opinion that there are no Indians left in Big Horn Country. Sgt. R. Drum A.A.G.
The reverse side of the dispatch contains a similar response written in ink: "Sept 9 1876/ from Adjt Genl to Commdg Officer. Fort Fetterman/ Directs him to send word to Capt Furey to bring his trains to Fetterman/gives instructions about movements."
This field dispatch is extremely rare, and is the only one known to exist from the Custer Campaign other than Custer's famed last dispatch to Captain Benteen. The response from General Sheridan arrived on September 9th, the same day as the Battle of Slim Buttes, in which General Crook's forces defeated Chief American Horse's Band of Sioux in the first US Army victory following General Custer's disastrous defeat at the Battle of Little Big Horn.
Loss on one side of dispatch some affecting text. Very small hole slightly affecting text on ink version of dispatch. Otherwise in good condition.
