Lot of 8, including a footlocker belonging to CSA Lieutenant Joseph R. Manson of the 50th Virginia Infantry, and a group of his collected documents.
Foot locker identified on front, reads, "Lt J R Manson / Mahones Brig. / Andersons Div? (indecipherable)." Pine construction, 24 in. l., 14 in. w., 17.25 in. ht., with rope handle on right side.
Accompanied by 7 Civil War-era documents concerning or written by J. R. Manson. Highlights include an 1862 partially printed and signed certificate from the Commonwealth of Virginia commissioning Manson "a First Lieutenant of Light Infantry in the 50th Regiment of the 15th Brigade and first Division of the Virginia Militia;" an 1863 battlefield letter from Manson to his sister, discussing his thoughts about death and many spiritual matters; an 1865 letter from "Near Appomattox Court House," detailing Manson's Masonic status; and an 1865 handwritten and signed labor contract between Manson and possible former slave Robert Davis, with terms including the service of Davis's son Henry as Manson's "house boy for the year 1866, for which he is to receive his victuals clothes and shoes."
Little else can be ascertained about Manson's Civil War participation, though there are monuments to both Mahone's Brigade and Anderson's Division of the Army of Northern Virginia, at Gettysburg, detailing the movements and contributions of both at the infamous battle.
