Republican Monitor. Cazenovia, NY: J.F. Fairchild & Son, May 10, 1836. Vol. XIII, No. 41. 4pp, 15 x 20 in.
A rare retraction of a previous report of the death of American hero and frontiersman, Davy Crockett, an early example of " fake news".
In defending the Alamo at San Antonio, TX, the slaughter of the American fighters was almost complete. The Mexican attackers believed that almost all the Americans had been killed including Colonel Davy Crockett. After the Mexicans had moved on, some of his acquaintances noticed that although severely wounded Colonel Crockett was "lying among the slain, still exhibiting signs of life. He was immediately taken care of..." A severe gash from a tomahawk on the forehead, a ball in his left arm, another through his thigh and several other "minor" wounds had been inflicted on Crockett. Asked who had killed the most Mexicans, an assistant to Colonel Travers said that he supposed Colonel Crockett did..."as he had the biggest pile of dead around him".
Further news includes a report on the status of General Scott's pursuit of the Seminole Indians across the swampy geography of Florida, noting that he was unable to bring his army to attack a sufficient number of Indians.
The expulsion of New York State Senators John C. Kemble and Isaac W. Bishop from the Senate is also discussed. They had been found guilty of "moral and official misconduct." The Senators had conspired with a bank associate to use bank funds to purchase stocks for the Senators.
Additionally, the Monitor reports on the massacre of three officers and three crew members from the whale ship Awashonks near the Fiji Islands. The islanders peacefully approached the ship offering fruit, bread, and yams. Once on board, they severed the head of the captain and briefly took control of the ship. A "Mr. Wood" discharged a pistol through a skylight which killed the island chief. The remainder of the crew, which had been hidden, immediately sailed for the Sandwich Islands.
Appears to have been disbound, few few light chips, short tears along vertical central fold, some areas of separation at this fold. Few light chips, tears along perimeter of each page. Very faint water stain along top left edge. Otherwise, nice, clean issue.
